Animal and plant cells

Grace used BBC Bitesize resources to study animal and plant cells as part of biology. She researched the structure and function of cells and produced a detailed fact book explaining the roles of different cell parts, as well as the similarities and differences between animal and plant cells. To demonstrate her understanding, she also created labelled diagrams of both an animal cell and a plant cell.

Human cells

Grace progressed to studying human cells, including sperm, blood, egg and muscle cells, developing her understanding of their specialised structures and functions within the human body. As part of this work, she explored how cells contribute to overall body systems and human development. She also created a labelled diagram of the human skeleton to support her learning about the structure of the body and its functions. These activities helped to strengthen her scientific understanding, research skills, and ability to communicate information effectively through written and visual work.

Photosynthesis

Her study of cells led naturally into the topic of photosynthesis, where she explored how plants produce their own food using sunlight, carbon dioxide, and water. This built on her understanding of plant cells, particularly the role of chloroplasts in energy production. Through this work, she developed her knowledge of how living organisms obtain and use energy. This was a topic we both enjoyed because we are keen gardeners.

Science

Grace has been following a structured programme of study in biology, where she has developed knowledge and understanding of living organisms, cell structure, specialised plant cells, and animal cells. Alongside this, she has been studying forensic science, learning how evidence is gathered, examined, and analysed through investigative techniques. These subjects have supported the development of her scientific knowledge, critical thinking, observation, and analytical skills as part of her home education provision.

Examples of science work

Environmental Studies

Grace has been studying the causes of extinction and the impact human activity and environmental changes can have on species survival.
